Job Description:
Overview: In an effort to increase our use of technology in our teaching at Emmanuel College, the Vice President of Academic Affairs along with the Deans of Arts and Sciences and Graduate and Professional Programs will be funding select faculty members to develop an online course between December 2009 and June 2010. These faculty members will teach the online course they create in the summer of 2010. Each course will successfully integrate established technology and pedagogies into existing courses.  
 
The online initiative at Emmanuel College has several goals. The first goal is to provide an opportunity for faculty members to expand how they view a course and its delivery. The second goal of this initiative is to provide greater access to courses for students who are not able to attend an on-campus course at Emmanuel College during the summer. The third goal is to continue to build online summer courses for an audience comprised of traditional undergraduates in Arts and Sciences and adult Graduate and Professional Programs student populations.  
 
Current Situation: Currently Emmanuel College offers hybrid courses and online courses. We are committed to ensuring that the students' experiences are both an engaging and innovative learning endeavors. The application platform for online courses is Blackboard Vista which is contracted through UMASS Online.  
 
Objectives: Emmanuel College is searching for responsible and self managed part time Instructional Designers to participate in the creation of our online courses. The qualified instructional designer candidate will work one to one with a faculty member to design their course.

Requirements:
Key responsibilities of the Instructional Designer will include:  
- Design of documents, assessment, discussion groups, storyboards, and other learning materials;  
- Design materials taking into account instructional design and learning theories;  
- Ensure that course materials and assessments effectively support the learning objectives;  
- Evaluate and assess course materials for effectiveness and impact.  
 
Skills and requirements:  
- Minimum of 2 years experience in higher education instructional design;  
- Familiarity with Blackboard 8.0.1, Flash, Dreamweaver, and Captivate;  
- Project management skills;  
- Strong copyedited and proofreading skills;  
- Excellent communication, consulting, and organizational skills;  
- Ability to revise content from the faculty members/course authors to develop an online course(s);  
- Track record with working with faculty members.
